The Best Time to Swipe: When Dating Apps Are Most Active

Timing matters more than you think — data shows when your matches are online.

If you have ever swiped through a dating app at 2 PM on a Tuesday and wondered where everyone went, you are not imagining things. Dating apps have peak hours just like bars and restaurants, and using the app during those windows dramatically increases your chances of matching.

According to data from multiple dating platforms, the single busiest window is Sunday evening between 7 PM and 10 PM. This makes sense — the weekend is winding down, people are home, and they are thinking about their social lives for the coming week. Bumble has reported that Sunday is their highest-activity day by a wide margin.

Weekday evenings, particularly Tuesday through Thursday between 8 PM and 10 PM, are the next best windows. People are done with work and dinner, settling onto the couch, and reaching for their phones. Monday tends to be slightly lower because people are recovering from the weekend.

The worst times to swipe are weekday mornings and afternoons. Between 9 AM and 5 PM, most people are at work and not actively checking dating apps. Your profile might get pushed down the stack before evening users ever see it. Friday and Saturday nights are also surprisingly weak — people who are already out socializing are not on their phones swiping.

There is a seasonal pattern too. January is the biggest month for dating apps globally, with sign-ups spiking after New Year resolutions. The period from late December through Valentine Day is peak season. Summer months see a dip as people are out doing things rather than scrolling.

What does this mean practically? If you are sending a first message, do it during peak hours when the person is likely online and might reply right away. A conversation that flows in real time is far more likely to lead to a date than one where messages sit for 12 hours. If you are updating your profile or uploading new photos, do that just before peak time so the algorithm-boosted version of your profile hits when the most people are active.

One more data point: Hinge reports that matches made on Sunday evenings are 15 percent more likely to turn into actual dates than matches made at other times. The theory is that both people are in planning mode for the week ahead and are more willing to commit to plans.
